| Course Description: |
Athenry Golf Club is a mixture of parkland
and heathland built on a limestone base against the backdrop of a large forest
giving excellent drainage and remaining playable all year round.Celebrating its centenary in 2002 this
pleasant test of Golf on the outskirts of Galway City offers a challenge for
golfers of all standards on a course which is un-crowded mid-week.Extended to 18-holes in 1991 under
the guidance of renowned architect, the late Eddie Hackett and further improvements
in recent years by Eddie Connaughton has lead to the club hosting recent Provincial
and National championships.
Feature holes are the 3 Par 3’s in
the adjoining woods with the signature 12th hole of 175 metres from an elevated
tee amongst a corridor of beech and pine trees one of the most challenging and
scenic holes to be seen throughout Ireland.Modern clubhouse with a friendly atmosphere
gives excellent views of much of the course and adjoining famous "Field
of Athenry". |

| Club History |
Instituted 1902 affiliated 1928.
There is some confusion as to the year Athenry was first founded.
The Golfing Annual of 1907-8, gives it as November, 1904, whereas the Irish
Golfers Guide, 1910 gives it as 1902. The Irish Golfers Guide 1911 reads "The
Club is deeply indebted to Mr. J. B. Concanon, Major Hall, Mr H. J. Concanon,
Mr J. M. Meldon and Dr. P. J. Quinlan. It is given as a nine-hole course measuring
2,353 yards, which were within half a mile of Athenry station".
The present location of Athenry is its fourth since its foundation, which is
typical of many rural Irish Clubs. The Great War had a drastic effect on Athenry,
as The Irish Golfers Guide records "Owing to the depletion of members,
on account of the war and falling-off of subscriptions, this club has been closed
for the present". |
|
| Location |
Five miles from Athenry town on the Galway road, eight miles from Galway city, half-mile off the main Dublin-Galway road. |
