Course Description:
There are beautiful places to play golf, there are stunning places to play golf and there is Killarney. The courses, of which there are three, lie in an incomparable setting, winding around the shores Lough Leane and with purple bulk Kerry mountains reflected clear water Leane, it is impossible to imagine a more perfect place play golf. Golf has been played in Killarney since 1891: originally on a nine-hole inland course. In the 1930’s golf itself and with a burgeoning tourist industry, became so popular in Killarney, it was thought advisable to expand. So another site was chosen, this time the Western Demesne. The first 18 Holes (Mahony’s Point) designed by Sir Guy Campbell and Henry Longhurst opened for play in 1939.Further lands were acquired in 1968 and the Killeen course designed by Eddie Hackett and Dr. Wm. O’Sullivan was constructed in 1969/70 and opened for play in 1971.
In recent years this course has hosted the Irish Open Championship in 1991 and 1992 - winner Nick Faldo on both occasions and the Curtis Cup in 1966.Further lands were acquired in 1995 and 1997 the Lackabane Course designed by Donald Steel was constructed and opened for play in 2000.For centuries the beauty and mystique of Killarney have, been lauded in song verse, through years great names golf have played on written about its courses.Societies are welcome and group rates are available.
Killarney's Killeen Course was Voted the No. 12-ranked golf course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2008. Killarney's Mahony's Point Course was Voted the No. 63-ranked golf course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2008. Killarney's Killeen Course was voted No. 7 Parkland/Inland Course in Ireland by "Backspin" Irelands leading Golf magazine in 2008, the panel comprised of a selection of 52 Professional and amateur golfers throughout Ireland. Club History
Instituted 1893, affiliated 1893. A letter in "The Irish Times" 27th May 1894, from the Captain, Walter Butler tells us among other things, about the "beauty of Killarney Golf Club". The Earl of Kenmare had given the use of his Deer Park and was the President of the club. It had forty members in its first year at an annual subscription of ten shillings. The course was extended to eighteen-holes in 1909, Willie Park gave advice on bunkers and other matters and was "Astonished at the sandy nature of the soil, quite expecting a clay or mud course so far inland. The trueness of the greens, with their sea, links grass especially took his fancy".
He predicted a great future for the Killarney links, how right he was.In 1936, the committee were looking for a new location and Lord Castlerosse, a keen golfer and son of Lord Kenmare, readily saw that the Western Demesne could be used for the new course. Under his guidance, The Killarney Golf Club Ltd. was formed. The course architects were Sir Guy Campbell and Henry Longhurst and the course was officially opened on 3rd October 1939. An additional eighteen holes were added in 1971 and another full eighteen were opened in 1999.

Members Achievements
Killarney Golf Club won the Munster Championship of the Fred Daly Trophy and were drawn against Connacht Champions Claremorris Golf Club in the All-Ireland Semi-Final at Dungarvan Golf Club on 24th August 2005.First on the tee was S. Gallivan who had a 3 and 2 win over C. O’Halloran, he was followed by S. O’Neill who had a similar win over S. Healy. Next up was P. O’Connor who halved his match with J. McNicholas. The penultimate match between C. Healy and P’ O’Connor saw the Killarney player record a 3 and 2 victory. The final match was halved between L. Dunlea and R. Hennelly.
They met Leinster Champions Castle Golf Club in the All-Ireland, S. Gallivan lead the way by halving his match with S. Webster, he was followed by S. O’Neill who lost by 2 and 1 to D. Lernihan. Next on the tee was P. O’Connor who halved his match with G. Lenehan. The penultimate match saw C. Healy lose by 4 and 3 to T. O’Connor. The bottom match had L. Dunlea against S. Swaine who lost out by 3 and 1.
Killarney Golf Club were County Champions in the J. B. Carr Diamond Trophy in 2005.
Simon Gallivan was selected on the Irish Boys Team that played Canada in a Junior Challenge match at Hamilton Golf and Country Club from 7th to 9th September 2004.
Killarney Ladies won the Southern District Championship of the Suzuki All-Ireland Senior Cup in 2004 but were beaten in the All-Ireland Semi-Final by Kilkenny at Athlone Golf Club on 4th September. The team was Tracey Eakin, Mary Sheehy, Ann Ladd, Joanne Cronin, Margaret Hayes, Deirdre Prendergast and Ailish Mulcahy.
Killarney Golf Club had a convincing win of 4.5 matches to .5 over Bandon in the Munster Final of the Bulmers Junior Cup in 2002. The team was Brendan O'Toole, David O'Donoghue, Rory O'Sullivan, James O'Neill, Jason Arthur, John Brosnan, James Arthur and George McKenzie-Vass. They were drawn against Portumna in the All-Ireland Semi-Final at Galway Golf Club on September 5th. They beat Portumna and met Leinster Champions Co. Louth on the Friday when they became All-Ireland Champions by 3 matches to 2 matches. The team on the day was Brendan O'Toole who won his match by 1-hole, Rory O'Sullivan who won by 4 and 2, David O'Donoghue, Jason Arthur who won by 1-hole, with a birdie at the last to clinch the match. and George McKenzie-Vass.
Killarney Golf Club won the All-Ireland Barton Shield 1980, at Lahinch Golf Club, when the team was Sean Coyne, James Loughnane, Michael Guerin, captain and Brien Mulcahy, R. Morrissy, G. O'Sullivan.
Killarney won the Munster Final of the Barton Shield when they beat Ennis. They went on to meet Co. Louth in the All-Ireland semi-final at Lahinch on 21st September. 2000. The squad was John and Dan Sugrue, Kevin Leacy, James Loughnane, Eugene O'Sullivan, David McIndoe and Paul Murphy. They went down to Co. Louth in the Semi-Final. The team was John Sugrue with Eugene O'Sullivan and Dan Sugrue with Kevin Leacy.
Killarney Golf Club won the All-Ireland Pierce Purcell Shield at Hermitage in 1977.
They won the Munster Barton Shield in 2002, 1980 and 1979.

The Girls' of Killarney Golf Club won the Munster Smurfit Junior Girls' in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 2003. They won the All-Ireland Final in 1995 and 1997.
Lady Captain Julie O'Donoghue, Captain Pat Courtney and President Denis Coffey, qualified for the National Finals of the Mercedes-Benz Irish Independent Executive Golf Classic at The K Club on August 12th 2002.
Bridget Gleeson-Healy and Eileen Rose Power were selected on the Munster Ladies team for the AIB Interprovincial Championships at Mount Wolseley Golf Club from August 7-9 August 2002.
Graeme Dunlea was selected on the Munster Boys' team for the Interprovincial's at Headfort Golf Club from August 28-30 2002.
Killarney Girls', Joann Cronin and Amy Duggan were selected on the Irish Girls' Team for 2001. They also were selected on the Munster Girls' team in the Smurfit Interprovincial Championship at Enniscrone Golf Club on the 18th to 20th April 2001.
Eoin O'Connell played Walker Cup at Peachtree Atlanta in 1989 and participated in the Home International matches in 1985 (he played in the Boys 1985 and he represented Munster from 1994 to 1995, winning 6 of his 10 matches before turning Pro.), as did P. Murphy from 1984 to 1986, (he represented Munster from 1986 to 1987).
Daniel Sugrue played for Munster in 1999 and participated in the Boys Home International matches in 1995 and 1996 and played Munster Youths from 1996 to 1998 playing 18 matches, having played Munster Boys in 1995.
T. Kelleher played Munster Youths from1984 to 1985.
P. Murphy played Munster Youths from 1980 to 1982, playing 12 matches.
J. Sugrue played Munster Youths from 1993 to 1995, playing 12 matches.
A. Duggan was selected on the ILGU Junior squad in November 2000.
Bridget Gleeson-Healy was selected on the Ladies Senior Munster team, which played in the Interprovincial Championship at Portstewart G.C. from the 9th to the 11th August 2000. She played for the Irish Girls in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981, and she won the Stroke Play Foursomes together with Miss Ada O'Sullivan of Monkstown in 1983; she won the Irish Girls Close Championship in 1980 and 1981. She was Munster Senior Champion in 1980. She was a member of the Irish Ladies Team in 1980 and 1982.
