Course Description

The large undulating greens at Little Island immediately puts the more observant in mind of Augusta National, the revered home of the U.S. Masters and of course there is a very good reason for this. Alister Mackenzie the Scottish doctor, who turned his back on medicine to dedicate himself to building some of the worlds finest golf courses, was the designer of both.

Cork Golf Club has hosted many Amateur and Professional Championships, is playable all year and is always in immaculate condition.

Visitors are assured of a warm welcome and will bring away many memories of this outstanding test of golf.

Voted the No. 37-ranked golf course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2008.

Cork was voted No. 23 Links/Shoreline Course in Ireland by "Backspin" Irelands leading Golf magazine in 2008, the panel comprised of a selection of 52 Professional and amateur golfers throughout Ireland.

Club History

Instituted 1894 affiliated 1900

The archives of Cork Golf Club were lost in a fire in 1945, which leaves the history of golf in Cork very unclear.

The Golfing Annual 1895-96 gives its institution date as 1st November 1894, located at Killahora as a nine-hole course, five minutes walk from Queenstown Junction Station. The first President was H. R. O’Kearney, Captain, G. Galway, and the Hon. Secretary was G. T. Harley, 41 South Mall, Cork.

The Rathconey Cup was lost in the 1945 fire, which was its oldest trophy, dating back to 1894.

The club moved to its present location in October 1898, which was a mile nearer to Cork City and the course at Killahora was only playable in winter. Mr. A. F. Sharman-Crawford J.P., President from 1898-1916 and Mr. H. H. Maudsley, the Captain in 1899, are credited with discovering the course on a trip upriver from Passage West. Tom Dunn, of the famous Musselburgh Dunn family, laid out the original nine-hole course, and it extended to eighteen, sometime between 1910 and 1916.

Location

4 miles east of Cork City off the N25 signposted.
