Course Description:

Castlerock Golf Club was founded over one hundred years ago in 1901. Ben Sayers expanded the original layout to 18-holes in 1908. Castlerock is renowned locally for its good greens - all year round. The best-known hole is the fourth, called the Leg o’ Mutton, a 200-yard par-3 with a railway line to the right, a burn on the left and a raised Green. The course varies from the norm in that it has five par-5’s four par-3’s and nine par-4’s adding up to a par of 73. Changes to Sayers’ layout were, made by Harry Colt in 1925 and in later years slight improvements were, made by Frank Pennick.Voted the No. 31-ranked golf course in Ireland, by “Golf Digest Ireland” in 2008.

Castlerock was voted No. 27 Links/Shoreline Course in Ireland by "Backspin" Irelands leading Golf magazine in 2008, the panel comprised of a selection of 52 Professional and amateur golfers throughout Ireland.

Club History

Instituted 1900 affiliated 1902.The first meeting of the inaugural members of Castlerock Golf Club was held on the 4th May 1900, in the Pavilion Castlerock. At the meeting, it was agreed to ask the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway Co. to send Mr. Baillie, a golfing expert, to survey the land and report on the probable expenditure required to layout the golf course. The Rev. Mr. Beckett was elected Hon. Secretary.

There were two ladies on the first committee, which had an expert from St. Andrews lay out a nine-hole course, which was opened in 1900. The Belfast Newsletter on 17th January records a professional match over the new links and that the official opening would take place at Easter that year. It was not too long before it was extended to eighteen-holes this was achieved in 1908, under energetic Mr. J. G McVicker the Hon. Secretary.

In the summer of 1913, a catastrophe struck when the clubhouse burned down. The members were not long about overcoming the setback and a new clubhouse was built before July 1914.
