Club History

Instituted 1893, affiliated 1950. The Royal Exchange Assurance Co. owned most of the land in Foxrock, and opened a proprietary golf club in March 1893. They built the club, in order to attract building on their lands. The clubs first President, was Sir C. Barrington, and Maj. H. Domville, was the Vice-President, the first Captain was C. J. Wallis. Ladies were admitted from the very beginning, and they had their own pavilion. The course was laid out by Mr. Brown a well-known professional golfer; there were separate links for younger players. Some, famous professionals were retained by the early club. First there was "Curley from Dollymount", he was followed by Mungo Park, who had won the British Open in 1874. He moved to Portmarnock Golf Club, shortly after arriving at Foxrock. The proprietary club finished in 1905.
