Club History |
Instituted 1891, affiliated 1901. Mystery surrounds the origins of golf in the Island. What is known is that it was only reachable by boat. Indeed, I have meet people who remember crossing from Malahide. It appears the following ten men were responsible for the Island coming into being. They were James R. Bristowe, J. R. Law, J. R. Blood, J. H. Barrington, T. Stewart, H. J. Daly, Daniel Martin Wilson, W. S. Hayes, Godfrey Fergusson and David T. Moore. Sunday golf was not permitted at the Royal Dublin and the above group decided the best way around this was to form another club and be able to play their golf on the Sabbath. The club was run by these "members", who acted as a permanent committee, all others were associate members. This situation was reversed in 1952, when a committee was elected by the associate members, who became full members. The first President was Lord Talbot De Malahide, the Captain, Norman Chance, and Hon. Secretary George Watson. Since then the links have been changed to make it into one of the very best link courses in the country. A new clubhouse was opened in 1998. |
