Instituted 1894, affiliated 1902. The Golfing Annual 1894-95, tells us that Co. Sligo was founded in 1894, that its first President was Col. Cooper, and the Vice-President was Sir H. W Gore-Booth, Bart "The course of nine-holes is situated at Rosses Point, about five miles from Sligo, but as there is plenty of ground available, it will before long be extended to eighteen-holes. The turf is of first-rate quality and the hazards are bunkers, sandpits, bends, a quarry, a wall, a road and broken ground. There is no crossing. The par of the round is 38." Mr. George Combe, was a key figure in setting up the club, and was the founding Secretary of the GUI, and the Combe cup is still played for at the club.
In April, 1907, the new nine-holes were opened, having been laid out by Mr. W. Campbell, a scratch golfer and a member of the Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society. In 1926, H. S Colt the famous golf architect was retained to redesign the course. Over the following two years, he laid out what is now the present championship course and home of the West of Ireland at Easter each year since 1923, except for three years when it went to Enniscrone, when the greens were being relayed. |

Co. Sligo Golf Club won the All-Ireland Final of the Irish Senior Cup in 2007, and where drawn against Munster Champions Castletroy Golf Club, in the All-Ireland Semi Final at Shandon Park.The team on the day was, Martin McTernan, Seryth Heavey, Keith O'Neill, Gary McDermott, and David Dunne.
First on the tee was Martin McTernan against Stephen Moloney who won his match 3 and 2, he was followed by Keath O'Neill who halved his match with Cian Daly. Next up was Seryth Heavey against Eamonn Haugh who had a comfortable 4 and 3 win over the Limerick man; Gary McDermott did even better against Jason Tobin when he recorded a 5 and 4 win to clinch the Semi-Final. David Dunne played as anchor, recorded a halve against John Kavanagh. With 4-matches to 1-match victory under their belt Co. Sligo met Ulster Champions Banbridge Golf Club in the All-Ireland Final on Saturday 15th September.
Martin McTernan led against Rory Leonard and had a 2 and 1 win over this seasoned player. Seryth Heavey met Richard Kilpatrick who won the East of Ireland Open Championship in 2007, and lost out by 3 and 1, next on the tee was Keith O'Neill who halved his match against Connor Doran. Gary McDermott had a convincing 6 and 4 win over Alistair McCully. David Dunne played in the bottom match against another seasoned golfer in Jim Carvill and this match went to the wire with David recording a 1-hole victory.
Co. Sligo recorded a 3 ½ matches to 1 ½ to clinch yet another All-Ireland title in this the “Blue Ribbon” of Golf.
Co. Sligo won the All-Ireland Fred Daly Trophy in 2007, when the team was Michael Duran, R. McNamara, T. McGowan, S. Brady, S. O'Hara, T. McDaid, S. Finnegan, R. O'Connor, T. Finnegan and they were captained by M. McManus.
Co. Sligo Golf Club were runners-up in the Connacht Final of the Fred Daly when they beaten by Athenry Golf Club at the Co. Galway club by 8 matches to 6 matches on 22nd April 2006.
The first round was played at Co. Sligo when Pat Neville was beaten by Tom McDaid on the 22nd-hole, next up was Ronan Everiss who lost to Stephen Brady by 3 and 2. He was followed by Andrew Trill who lost to Michael Durcan by 5 and 4. Next up was Sean Coyne who lost to Gerard Finnegan by a single hole. He was followed by Aengus Farrell who beat Daniel Dolan by 2-holes. The penultimate match saw Cillian Broder lose to Steffan O’Hara by 3 and 1. The final match was a very convincing lose for Barry O’Brien to Oliver Howes with a 7 and 6 result.
The second leg was played at Athenry Golf Club with the home team 3-matches down after their trip to the Point, but local knowledge was to play a major part in determining the outcome. First up was Patrick Neville who beat Tony McDaid by 1-hole. He was followed by Ronan Everiss who beat Stephen Brady by 3 and 1. The 3rd match of Andrew Trill against Michael Durcan went all-the-way up the 20th before the Galway club notched up another win. They were followed by Sean Coyne who beat Gerard Finnegan by 2-holes. Angus Farrell lost to Daniel Dolan by 3 and 2. Then Cillian Broder beat Steffan O’Hara by 2 and 1.The final match say Barry O’Brien beat Oliver Howes by 4 and 3.
Co. Sligo Golf Club won the Connaught Final of the Barton Shield in 2006, when they had epic tussle with Galway Golf Club on the 12th August at the Enniscrone Golf Club, the match was decided by 1-hole
It was back to Enniscrone Golf Club for the National Finals, where they where drawn against Ulster Champions North West Golf Club in the All-Ireland Semi-Final on Wednesday 13th September.
First on the tee was David Dunne with Serryth Heavey against Garrett Mallon with David McGeough this match finished all-square. They were followed by Ken Kearney with Keith O’Neill against Pauric Og O’Flaherty with Cathal McElhinney, Kearney and O’Neill won by 3-holes to put Co. Sligo into the All-Ireland Final against Limerick who hat a 3-hole win over Mullingar.
Co. Sligo kept the same formation the following day for the All-Ireland Final, when they put David Dunne with Serryth Heavey out against Michael O’Kelly with Dermot Morris, Co. Sligo went 3-holes up in the first match, better was to follow when Ken Kearney with Keith O’Neill had a 4-hole win over Pat Murray and Mick Kemmy, to give Co. Sligo their 4th All-Ireland Barton Shield having won done the-three-in-a-row from 1995 to 1997.
2005 Lady Captain Martina Sherlock and her Captain's Prize winner Kathleen Keane qualified in the Volkswagen/Irish Independent Lady Captain's Classic in this scotch foursomes format. It was off to the National Finals at The Heritage Golf Club on Monday 3rd October where they were paired with the Headfort pair of Mary McQuillan and Brigid Smith.
Martin McTernan and G. McDermott were selected on the Connacht team for the Interprovincial Matches played at Portmarnock Golf Club from 11th to 13th August 2004.
Sean McTernan won the Irish Amateur Open Championship at Carton House on 9th May 2004 and finished 3rd in the Willie Gill Order of Merit Award. Sean was selected to play in the Home Internationals at Prestwick Golf Club from 8th to 10th September 2004.
Co. Sligo won the Connaught Championship of the Irish Club Youths and played in the National Finals at Royal Tara Golf Club on August 26th 2002. The team was Sean and Martin McTernan, Garth McManus, Kevin Dufficy and John Gleeson.
Co. Sligo were runners-up in the Connaught Final of the Irish Senior Cup at Galway Golf Club in 2002, when the team was Shane Underwood, Shane Flanagan, Tom Ford, David O'Donoghue, Ray McDaid, Sean McTernan, Serryth Heavey and Aidan Anderson. They were managed by Stephen O'Donovan.
Sean McTernan, was selected for the Home Internationals at Royal St. David's Golf Club in Harlech, Wales, from September 11th-13th 2002. He played in the Mexican Amateur stroke play Championship at Club Campester de la Ciudad, Mexico City on February 14th to the 17th 2002.
Garth McManus was selected on the Connaught Boys' team for the Interprovincial Championships at Headfort Golf Club from August 28-30 2002.
Lady Captain Joan Harte and her Captains Prize winner Maura Rafferty qualified for the Volkswagen-Irish Independent Lady Captains' Classic National Finals at Druid's Glen on the 1st October 2001.
Mary Conefrey came 3rd in a count back at the Irish Times Mitsubishi Motors Women's Masters semi-final, when she returned 36 points at Glasson Golf Hotel & Country Club on the 23rd of August 2001. Mary went on to the National Finals at Galway Bay Golf & Country Club on 13th of September.
Young Sean McTernan now studying at the University of Toledo was part of the team that set a team record score of 11-under for the 54-hole tournament at the University Ridge Course. He was joined by fellow Irish players Davey Jones and Alan Murray. Sean was selected on the six-man Irish team for the European stroke-play championship in Denmark, from 22nd to 25th August 2001.
Martin McTernan was selected on the Irish Boys team for the Home Internationals at Moortown, Leeds in August 2001.
Co. Sligo have a long and proud record at National Championships at all levels. They won the All-Ireland Irish Senior Cup at Tramore G. C. in 1996, when the team was G. Sproule, Ken Kearney, Kevin Flanagan, David Dunne, Tom Ford, J. Gleeson, S. Heavey and G. Patterson. They were captained by G. McManus.
They won the All-Ireland Irish Senior Cup at Dundalk G. C. in 1997 when the team was G. Sproule, Sean McTernan, F. Doherty, A. Anderson, G. Patterson, K. Flanagan, T. Ford, D. O'Donevan, P. Morgan, Ken Kearney and S. Heavey. They were captained again by J. McManus.
They won the All-Ireland Barton Shield at Dundalk G. C. in 1997, when the team was Ken Kearney, S. Heavey, D. Dunne, G. Sproule and K. Flanagan. They were captained by P. O'Gara.

They won the All-Ireland Irish Junior Cup at home in 1939, when the team was W. J. Fitzgerald, W. O'Connor, T. L. Mahon and Liam Howley. They were captained by T. J. Jameson.
They clinched the All-Ireland Irish Mixed Foursomes at Galway G. C. in 1984 and at Kilkenny G. C. in 1987, when the team was K. Darling, S O'Reilly, G. McManus, S. Crowley, T. Ford, G. Demmel, T. Crowley, I. O'Donovan, S, Rooney, S. Rooney P. Neiland and F. Howley. They were captained by A. Murphy.
Co. Sligo youths' won the All-Ireland Irish Youths Team Championship at Kilkenny G. C in 1990, when the team was, Francis Howley, Gerard Sproule, Noel Quirke, Gary Reynolds and they were captained by Colm Gannon.
Co. Sligo youths' won the All-Ireland Irish Youths Team Championship at Birr G. C. in 1988, when the team was, Francis Howley, S. Quirke, Gerard Spoule and they were captained by Colm Gannon.
The girls' won the All-Ireland Junior Foursomes in 1998 and the All-Ireland Smurfitt Juvenile Girls' in 1991, and 1992, when the team was A. Howley, C. Mulligan, B. Neiland, E. Reynolds and they were captained by D. Neiland.
Co. Sligo won the Connaught Final of the Irish Senior Cup when they beat Claremorris. They played Elm Park in the All-Ireland semi-finals at Lahinch on 22nd September, 2000. The squad was Aidan Anderson, Tom Ford, David O'Donovan, Sean McTernan, Ken Kearney, Kevin Flanagan, George Paterson and Seryth Heavey. They went down to Elm Park in the Semi-Final. The team was Ken Kearney, S. Heavey, Sean McTernan, G. Patterson and Martin McTernan.
Martin McTernan won the Under-16 Trophy in the Irish Boys Amateur Close Championship, at Strandhill, on 25th August, 2000, with a score of 281. He was selected on the Boys' Home International Team at Portmarnock G. C. on 9th to 11th September, 2000. He was the Irish Boys Amateur Close Championship at Kilkenny G. C. on 20th August, 1999, shooting a final round of 68 with birdies on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th, to spread the field. Martin is the second boy in the history of the Irish Boys to win the under16, under 17 and under 18 boys, the other being Lee Dalton of Waterford G. C., who did it at Mullingar G. C. in 1994. Brother Sean caddied for Martin, which must have been a great help.
Sean McTernan captained the Irish team in the World Junior Championship in Hyogo, Japan, in June, 1999. He represented Ireland in the European Amateur Team Championship at Uppsala, Sweden, in July, 1999, and the Boys' Home Internationals at Conwy G. C., Wales, in August, 1999. He won the Munster Youths' Amateur Open Championship at Tramore G. C., on the 18th April, 1999, with scores 73, 71, 69 and 71 a total of 284
Co. Sligo were second to Grange in the Fred Daly Championship at Castlecomer G. C., on 17th August, 1999.
The team was Sean McTernan, Martin McTernan, Brian Cribben, Garry McDermott and Ronan Flood.
Cecil Ewing played Walker Cup from 1936 to 1955; he participated in the Home Internationals from 1934 to 1958, playing 92 matches. D. Dunne played in 1997, and Ken Kearney from 1988 to 1998, playing 48 matches to date. (He has represented Connaught from 1985 to 1998, having played 48 matches). Terence Duffy participated in the Boys Home Internationals in 1994, (and represented Connaught in 1994, playing Connaught Youths in 1994 and Connaught Boys in 1993), as did D. Dunne in 1992 and 1993, (representing Connaught from 1995 to 1998, playing 23 matches, playing Connaught Youths from 1992 to 1996 with 24 matches), and Francis Howley in 1993, (he played Connaught Youths from 1988 to 1990, playing 17 matches), together with G. Sproule in 1989 to 1991, and played Connaught Youths from 1988 to 1994 playing 37 matches.
Most recently Sean McTernan represented Connaught in 1998 and played Connaught Youths in 1997 and 1998, playing 12 matches, having played Connaught Boys' from 1995 to 1998, playing 18 matches.
K. Flanagan represented Connaught from 1988 to 1997, he played Connaught Youths from 1981 to 1985, playing 16 matches.
T. Ford represented Connaught from 1988 to 1998, playing 19 matches. S. McTernan represented Connaught in 1997. S. O'Donovan represented Connaught from 1983 to 1986, playing 20 matches.
S. Rooney represented Connaught from 1985 to 1987, and played Connaught Youths from 1979 to 1984, playing 22 matches.
G. Sproule represented Connaught from 1991 to 1996.
J. McDermott played Connaught Youths in 1991.
David O'Donovan played in the Connaught Youths in 1993 .
